As of the time of publication, the children of Bernard Kops are unidentified. The play was chosen to launch Wesker’s TUC-supported Center 42 project in Wellingborough, Northamptonshire, as part of an initiative to present new plays at regional festivals. The attempt failed, and in 1966 the project was resurrected at the Roundhouse in north London, but without Kops’s play.

Kops remained a bit part in the repertory of the National, West End, and even the Royal Court. Still, he wrote and produced forty plays for radio, television, and small theaters by the end of his prolific career.

Born in the East End of London, Bernard Kops was the son of Jewish parents Joel Kops and Jenny Zetter. Joel Kops, his tailor father, and Jenny Zetter, his mother, were both immigrants from the Netherlands.

He was educated at Whitechapel Library, which he referred to as “the university of the poor,” and Stepney Jewish Primary School. He read a great deal there and decided to pursue writing while earning a living by working as a docker, chef, and barrow boy.
