Charlie Biton grew up with six siblings on Jerusalem’s pre-1967 border in the impoverished neighborhood of Musrara, which was then home to hundreds of North African and Iraqi Jewish families. In early 1971 he was one of the founders of the Israeli Black Panthers movement, along with Sa’adia Marciano, Reuven Abergel, and Eli Avichzer.
