James continued to play hockey even after he gave up playing competitive football. He was a coach in Switzerland in 1963 and, in the 1980s, managed Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League clubs in Yorkton, Melville, and Moose Jaw.

James lived in British Columbia after that. James played for the Parksville, British Columbia, Allwood Finishers Dart Team in 2015.
