He spoke to thousands of supporters at Mexico City’s Angel of Independence monument following the announcement of the results. Vicente began working there on December 1, 2000. For the first time since 1917, the long-reigning Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) had lost to an opposition candidate.

During his campaign, Vicente gained notoriety for his cowboy attire and representation of Mexico’s working class.
