David Bordwell, a renowned cinema scholar and tenured faculty member at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, passed away on February 29 following a protracted illness, the university announced.

David Bordwell was married to a fellow UW professor, Kristin Thompson. Bordwell co-wrote the textbooks Film Art (1979) and Film History (1994) with his wife Kristin Thompson. Film Art, which is currently in its 12th edition, is still regarded as a foundational text for beginning film courses as of 2024.

Bordwell was born on July 23, 1947, in Penn Yan, New York. He studied English literature and graduated from the State University of New York in Albany in 1969. Not long after finishing his doctoral studies at the University of Iowa, he became a member of the UW faculty in the Communication Arts Department.
