Anatoly Vershik was brought up in a lovely family, he was born on December 28, 1933, in Leningrad, Russian SFSR, USSR. He studied at Leningrad State University, receiving his doctoral degree in 1974; his advisor was Vladimir Rokhlin. He never revealed his parents.

Anatoly Vershik’s siblings are not known. However, after his university studies, he worked at the St. Petersburg Department of Steklov Institute of Mathematics and Saint Petersburg State University. In 1998–2008, he was the president of the St. Petersburg Mathematical Society.

In 2012, Vershik became a fellow of the American Mathematical Society. In 2015, he was elected a member of Academia Europaea.
